A federal appeals court has found that students have a constitutional right to a “basic education,” and some are hailing the ruling as momentous. But it’s unlikely to have much impact.

According to common legal wisdom, based in decades-old Supreme Court precedents, there is no such thing as a federal constitutional right to education. When a complaint arguing for such a right was filed by a group of Detroit students in 2016, a district judge dismissed it, not even allowing the case to go to trial.
