Teachers: the most powerful force for quality education, World Teachers’ Day 2014

5th October is World Teachers’ Day, which provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the millions of teachers past and present who have made a tremendous impact on the lives of billions of people, and to raise the profile of the challenge posed by the huge teacher gap which remains to achieve universal primary education.
Almost 5 million people have so far voted for their global development priorities in the United Nations’ MyWorld2015 survey, and once again education has come out on top. However, education remains a distant dream for the millions of children who are out of school, and who are unable to read or write: 1.4 million new teachers are needed to achieve universal primary education by 2015.
