Regional Meeting on Alternative Learning/Schooling Programmes for Primary Education to Reach the Unreached – Outcome Document
As 61 million children remain out of school, it is becoming apparent that conventional schooling methods are not sufficient in reaching those who are the most marginalized and vulnerable. In November 2012, UNESCO and UNICEF held a Regional Meeting on Alternative Learning/Schooling Programmes for Primary Education to Reach the Unreached in Bangkok, Thailand to urgently discuss the alternative pathways to providing education. The meeting brought together mid- to high-level government officials, NGO representatives and experts from 23 countries in the Asia-Pacific region to share strategies that have been effective in reaching out-of-school children in their respective countries. This report includes a summary of the 21 case presentations given, the key areas of discussion and the participants’ final recommendations.
