Telenor Myanmar reports it has raised MYR 483.5 million in its first public auction of special numbers held on 25 February. Telenor auctioned 55 special numbers. All profits above the reserve price of MYR 3 million per number, in this case a total of MYR 318.3 million, will be used to fund digital education efforts organised by Myanmar Mobile Education’s (myME) programmes in 2016.
The highest single bid of the day was received for 0977 7777777, sold for MYR 112 million, the operator said. Telenor also plans to hold future auctions in other states and divisions, with dates and times to be announced in the future.
All the money collected will be given to myME and support its plans to provide education for up to 10,000 children in 2016. Telenor has been a MyME partner since 2014 and provided financial support enabling myME to offer vocational training for tea-shop children. By end-2015 more than 900 children were enrolled in the program. The Telenor-myME joint upcoming and newly developed programmes comprise technology-assisted non-formal and vocational education to out-of-school children nationwide. The partners aim to reach 5,000 to 10,000 students by the end of 2016, and over 20,000 students by the end of 2017.
Various initiatives under this project will be implemented through Telenor Light House, myME Chapter and myME Box App. The programme will be delivered only Burmese language initially, will be available in other ethnic languages in 2017 and beyond.
